The last major Confederate offensive of the war was General John Hood's
invasion of Tennessee in late 1864. After failing to trap a Union army at
Spring Hill (29 November 1864) , Hood launched a futile attack on the same Union army in a defensive position at
Franklin (30 November 1864), before his army was finally crushed at
Nashville (15-16 December 1864). The failure of Hood's offensive, at a high cost and with nothing achieved, began to convince many across the south that the Confederacy was doomed.
