A very detailed account of the days from the battle of Mons to the end
of the retreat and the first steps towards victory on the Marne, a
period dominated by a long retreat and a number of fierce rear-guard
actions. Well supported by eyewitness accounts of the retreat, and with
evidence from the British, French and German sides, this is a good
addition to the literature on this well-studied period.
