Alexander I, Tsar of Russia (1777-1825)
was one of the most important figures in the eventual defeat of
Napoleon. His refusal to negotiation with Napoleon after the fall of
Moscow eventually forced the French to begin the disastrous retreat
that destroyed the Grand Army and helped encourage Germany to revolt
against Napoleon.
