The battle of Lone Tree Hill or Wakde-Sarmi (17 May-2 September 1944)
was a hard-fought contest for control of a strip of the New Guinea
coast near the island of Wakde, and saw the Americans eventually win
control of a large enough area for them to use as a staging post on the
way to further advances.
