The third British siege of Badajoz (16 March-6 April 1812)
finally saw the city fall to Wellington's troops after two previous
attacks had failed. However the final storm of the city was terribly
costly, and was followed by a brutal sack that was one of the darkest
incidents in the history of the British army.
